Hurricane Season Is Upon Us

7/19/2022 (Permalink)

Hurricane Damage Hurricanes and tropical storms can cause a lot of damage.

You will get some warning with a tropical storm or hurricane.

As the Storm Approaches

In Sarasota, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Lakewood Ranch and other areas of Sarasota and Manatee counties, listen for weather updates on local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio. Stay tuned to the latest information.

REMEMBER: Hurricanes can be unpredictable. There is always potential error in the forecast track from the National Hurricane Center. Don’t focus on the exact forecasted track, listen to local officials. (For more information go to www.noaa.gov or www.weather.gov, click on Tampa Bay area.)

Check your Disaster Supplies. Get any needed items.

Clean and fill bathtubs and sinks before a storm so you’ll have extra clean water.

Turn refrigerator and freezer dials to the coldest settings and avoid opening the doors to help keep perishable food in case of a power outage.

Refill prescriptions. Maintain at least a two-week supply of medication during hurricane season.

Clear your yard of lawn furniture, potted plants, bicycles, trash cans and other potential airborne missiles. Leave the swimming pool filled and super-chlorinated. Cover the filtration system.

Protect your windows and glass doors with plywood or storm shutters. Brace double entry and garage doors at the top and bottom.

If there is a chance flooding could threaten your home, move important items such as electronics, antiques and furniture off the floor.

Fill your car’s gas tank and check oil, water and tires. Gas pumps won’t operate without electricity.

Secure your boat early. Drawbridges will be closed to boat traffic after an evacuation order is issued.

Get cash. Banks and ATMs won’t work without electricity and few stores will be able to accept credit cards or personal checks.

Never sweep or blow yard leaves, pine needles, grass clippings or soil into the street or storm water system. This clogs up the storm water pipes and prevents water from draining.

Fires Can Happen In The Early Morning Hours

7/19/2022 (Permalink)

House fires House fires can be devastating.

In the early morning hours, SERVPRO of North Sarasota received a call from homeowners letting us know about a fire that was engulfing their home.  The fire ignited from one of their collectible corvettes parked in their garage and the fire then spread to the inside of their home.

When we arrived on the scene, firefighters were just cleaning up from the smoke damaged home.  The soot carried throughout the whole 2,500 Sq. Ft. home and destroyed many belongings and even left no trace of two vehicles on the garage except for the body frame. We were able to assess the area and let the homeowner know that we will do our best to clean up the damaged areas to where it will feel like home again.

We know how it was to deal with fire damage within a home and the time it will take to get this all squared away.

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Flooding Flooding

The Time To Prepare Is NOW!

  • Knowing the types of flood risk in your area, visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center for information.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
  • If flash flooding is a risk in your location, then monitor potential signs, such as heavy rain.
  • Learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood response.
  • Gather all of your supplies in case you have to leave immediately, or if services are cut off. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Don’t forget the needs of pets. Obtain extra batteries and charging devices for phones and other critical equipment.
  • Purchase or renew a flood insurance policy. It typically takes up to 30 days for a policy to go into effect and can protect the life you've built. Homeowner’s policies do not cover flooding.
  • Keep important documents in a waterproof container. Create password-protected digital copies.
  • Protect your property. Move valuables to higher levels. Declutter drains and gutters. Install check valves. Consider a sump pump with a battery.

Fires In Your Home

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Home Fire Home Fire

Here in Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, and Lonfboat Key, a fire in your home can happen before you know it. In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, your home can be engulfed in flames.

Learn The FactsAbout Fires

  • Fireis FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames.
  • Fire is HOT! Heat is more threatening than flames. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs and melt clothes to your skin.
  • Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.

Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan

Smoke Alarms

A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.

During a Fire

  • Crawl low under any smoke to your exit - heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect first along the ceiling.
  • Before opening a door, feel the doorknob and door. If either is hot, or if there is smoke coming around the door, leave the door closed and use your second way out.
  • If you open a door, open it slowly. Be ready to shut it quickly if heavy smoke or fire is present.
  • If you can’t get to someone needing assistance, leave the home and call 9-1-1 or the fire department. Tell the emergency operator where the person is located.
  • If pets are trapped inside your home, tell firefighters right away.
  • If you can’t get out, close the door and cover vents and cracks around doors with cloth or tape to keep smoke out.  Call 9-1-1 or your fire department. Say where you are and signal for help at the window with a light-colored cloth or a flashlight.
  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll – stop immediately, drop to the ground, and cover your face with your hands.  Roll over and over or back and forth until the fire is out.  If you or someone else cannot stop, drop, and roll, smother the flames with a blanket or towel.  Use cool water to treat the burn immediately for 3 to 5 minutes.  Cover with a clean, dry cloth.  Get medical help right away by calling 9-1-1 or the fire department.

Why Clean Carpet or Upholstery?

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Cleaning Carpets Carpet cleaning

Living and working in Sarasota, Longboat Key and Lakewood Ranch can take up a lot of your time, so who has time to worry about clean carpeting? Clean carpeting in your home or office not only makes it look clean but also make your home or office feel more warm and inviting.

Preventative Maintenance

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet. IICRC states that 79% of soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a key component to proper care and maintenance of carpet.

Preventative maintenance includes:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Pilating the carpet to prevent matting
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Professional Cleaning

Our professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil. If you wait until carpets look really dirty, the carpets may never be restored to their former appearance. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

SERVPRO of North Sarasota will get the job done right. For a cleaning backed by state-of-the-art equipment, over 40 years of experience and Professionals trained to the highest standards, call us today. SERVPRO of North Sarasota is ready to serve you.

Do You Have Mold In your Home?

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Mold Mold in the home

Living in Sarasota, Siesta Key, Longboat Key and Lakewood Ranch, there is always the possibility of mold. Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building. This is a fallacy. Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Sometimes we will refer out to another vendor to get testing done before and after SERVPRO® of North Sarasota remediates.

By testing for mold you can tell if there is an unhealthy level of spores in your house and find out if any allergies you might have are from mold or something else. Mold testing after removing mold can be useful after you've had mold removed from your home. Through testing you can make sure that the mold removal was a success.

There are 3 different testing methods: 1) indoor air quality to test for mold spores, 2) the AC/heating mold sampling tests the air from a forced air heating and air conditioning unit, and 3) surface mold sampling which test mold that is already growing on a surface.

SERVPRO of North Sarasota specializes in mold cleanup, remediation and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained remediation and restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

If You see signs of mold, call SERVPRO of North Sarasota 941-365-4614.

Tips for Preparing Your Family, Home and Business from the Threat of Wildfires From FEMA*

Storms Come In Many Different Types

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Storms Always be aware of any approaching storm in your area.

Living in Sarasota, you may ask yourself, “What kind of storms are there? And what kind are common in my area?”

Well, there are many different types of storms, such as:

Derecho Storms

Tropical Storms

Hurricanes

Flooding

Hail Storms

Snow Storms

Hurricanes

Ice Storms

Lightning

Thunderstorms

The most common types of storms in the Sarasota area are:

Derecho Storms

Tropical Storms

Hurricanes

Flooding

Hail Storms

Lightning

Thunderstorms

A thunderstorm is a storm with lightning and thunder. It’s produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, usually producing gusty winds, heavy rain and sometimes hail. The basic ingredients used to make a thunderstorm are moisture, unstable air and lift. You need unstable air that is relatively warm and can rise rapidly.

Damage comes not only from high winds, but also from the so-called marine over wash, a combination of effects resulting from tropical storm conditions that include storm surge, wind setup, wave setup, and wave swash. The primary effect is the storm surge resulting from extremely low atmospheric pressure.

If you are affected by a storm with water damage call SERVPRO® of North Sarasota 941-365-4614.

Chimney Fires

1/12/2022 (Permalink)

Chimney Fire Chimney fires are one of the leading cause of house fires during the winter months.

Chimney Fire Facts

While the chimney in your home may look great, it’s real purpose is to carry dangerous gases from your furnace, wood stove or fireplace away from your home and family.

However, if you don’t give any thought to your chimney before you light your wood stove or fireplace this winter, you may not be enjoying the warm glow of your fireplace or wood stove very long.

The Reason?

Damaged or dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires that will damage homes, buildings and injure people.

Signs of a chimney fire can include:

  • A hot and intense smell.
  • Loud cracking and popping noise.
  • Large amount of dense dark smoke.
  • Chimney fires can be explosive, noisy and dramatic enough to alarm your neighbors and people passing by. People have reported sounds resembling a large freight train with flames and dense smoke shooting from the top of the chimney.

The best prevention of chimney fires is to have regular inspections performed by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep.

    Most Chimney Fires Go Undetected

Most slow-burning chimney fires don’t get enough air or have the fuel to be dramatic, they often go undetected until later inspections. However, the temperatures they reach can get very high and cause a lot of damage to the chimney structure and the combustible parts of your home.

9 Signs That You Have Had A Chimney Fire

Since a chimney, damaged by a chimney fire, can endanger a home and its’ occupants and a chimney fire can occur without anyone being aware of them it’s important to have your chimney regularly inspected by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep. Here are the signs that a professional chimney sweep looks for:

If you think a chimney fire has occurred, call a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep for a professional evaluation. If your suspicions are confirmed, a certified sweep will be able to make recommendations about how to bring the system back into compliance with safety standards. Depending on the situation, you might need a few flue tiles replaced, a new liner system installed or an entire chimney rebuilt. Each situation is unique and will dictate its own solution.

    1. Puffy of honeycombed creosote.
    2. Discolored and/or distorted rain cap.
    3. Warped metal of the damper, metal smoke chamber connector pipe pr factory built metal chimney.
    4. Evidence of smoke escaping through mortar joints of masonry or tile liners/
    5. Cracked or collapsed flue tiles or tile with large chunks missing.
    6. Heat damaged TV antenna attached to the chimney.
    7. Creosote flakes and pieces found on the room or ground.
    8. Roofing material damaged from hot creosote.
    9. Cracks in the exterior masonry.

    Proper Maintenance

Clean chimneys don’t catch fire. Make sure a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® inspects your solid fuel venting system annually, and sweeps and repairs it whenever needed. Your sweep may have other maintenance recommendations depending on how you use your fireplace or stove. CSIA recommends that you call on CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps®, since they are regularly tested on their understanding of the complexities of chimney and venting systems.

How To Locate And Use Your Water Shut-Off Valve

    1/12/2022 (Permalink)

Water Shut-Off Valve It's A Good Idea To Always Know The Location Of Your Water Shut-Off Valve.

How to Find Your Shut-Off Valve

Knowing where your water shut-off valve is could mean the difference between a small water damage and a large one. Start by looking around the perimeter of your house/property. Usually, the shut-off valve will be on the side of your house/property that faces the street (water mains usually begin there). If you're having trouble finding your valve, you should check the plumbing section of your property inspection report. The location is usually written there with a picture of the valve. As a last resort, you may want to utilize the street-side shut-off valve, located at the beginning of your water main.

How to Operate Your Water Shut-Off Valve

Once you find your shut-off valve, you will need to know how to turn it on and off. There are different types of valves and different ways to turn them off and on. Below you will find the way to operate the most common used valves:

    • Knife Style Valve. A knife style valve resembles a straight handle. In order to open the valve, you'll want to put the handle parallel to the pipe. Turning the handle sideways will then shut the valve.
    • Round Handle Valve. A round handle valve turns in a circular motion to be turned on and off. In order to turn the valve off, you'll want to turn it left until it is tight.
    • House Side Valve. There is a street-side utility box for your house. You can access it by lifting the lid and putting it to the side. The side of the box facing your house will contain the house side valve. It usually had a knob or nut to turn off and on.
    • Street Side Valve. The other side of the utility box facing the street will contain the street side valve. This valve is only supposed to be handled by water companies, so you will want to ignore it (it likely won't be able to be used without a special tool anyways).

If you have any questions about water, mold or fire remediation, call your local professionals at SERVPRO® of North Sarasota.

    Condo Living: Pros and Cons

    9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Old plumbing will always be the enemy! SERVPRO always needed in older condominiums

SERVPRO always and will always have calls out to condominiums. In Florida, vacation and retirees prefer condos for obvious reasons. Less hassle of maintenance, no landscaping responsibility, and a community feel are important to snow birds and people here on pleasure.

One of the biggest problems with condominiums though is that if one unit has a problem, more than likely several units do. Condominiums even at the most expensive ends still may be older. As with this building, the property manager even says, "You live in a condo, you're eventually going to have water problems." His particular building was built in the 1970's when they still used cask iron plumbing. It is just a part of regular maintenance for him now to clean and patch up what he can, because a full plumbing replacement is not possible and not cost effective.

From one floor to the next underneath it, in the walls and in the carpet, water will always find a way!

Luckily SERVPRO got there quick when the problem was discovered or their building could have been compromised more by standing water. We won't always have perfect buildings because of time and shifting environments, but that's when you know you can count on SERVPRO!

    Mistakes Happen!

Grease Fire Grease fires can be avoided but can also get uncontrollable.

US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 172,900 home structure fires per year started by cooking activities in 2014-2018.

Cooking was, by far, the leading cause of all residential building fires and injuries.

Confined fires, generally smaller fires, accounted for 91 percent of residential building cooking fires.

In 83 percent of nonconfined cooking fires in residential buildings, the fires were limited to the object or room of fire origin.

The leading specific factor contributing to ignition in nonconfined cooking fires in residential buildings was unattended equipment (40 percent).

Smoke alarms and automatic extinguishing systems (AESs), 67 and 8 percent respectively, were present in nonconfined cooking fires in occupied residential buildings.

Home fires are preventable! The following are simple steps that each of us can take to prevent a tragedy.

    • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
    • Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.
    • Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid-free zone" of 3 feet around the stove.
    • Position barbecue grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
    • Reached more than 1.1 million children through preparedness programs.

    As the Storm Approaches

Listen for weather updates on local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio.

This clogs up the stormwater pipes and prevents water from draining.

    • Know types of flood risk in your area. Visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center for information.
    • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.

    • Learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood response.
    • Gather supplies in case you have to leave immediately, or if services are cut off.

    Preventative maintenance actions include:

Fire happens! But unlike other disasters, home fires can be prevented! It's important to know this: Fire is fast! There is no time to gather anything or make a phone call. In just two minutes, a fire could kill you. In five minutes, a house could be swallowed in flames.

Fire is hot! Heat and smoke could be even more dangerous than the flames. Breathing in really hot air could burn your lungs, and fire produces poisonous gases that can make you sleepy and unable to escape. Fire is dark! It can be hard to find your way out of your house in a fire. Fire is deadly! Fire uses up oxygen you need to breathe and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill.

Immediate action is crucial when dealing with water and fire damage. We’re dedicated to responding immediately when you need help. A fast response helps lessen the damage, limits secondary damage, and reduces costs.

    “Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation

    What’s the Difference?

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth. SERVPRO of North Sarasota has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Signs of Mold? Call Today – (941) 365-4614

    Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

    • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
    • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
    • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
    • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
    • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
    • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

    Covid-19 Facts from The Experts!

Technician with PPE SERVPRO technician with PPE

    * The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes their genetic code (mutation) and converts them into aggressor and multiplier cells.

    * Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.

    * The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam).

By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.

    * HEAT melts fat; use water above 25 degrees Celsius for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.

    * Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.

    * Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.

    * Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.

How much Mold does your home have?

    2/20/2020 (Permalink)

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building. This is a fallacy. Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Some times we will refer out to another vendor to get testing done before and after SERVPRO of North Sarasota remediates.

SERVPRO of North Sarasota specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Don't let old appliances wash away your wallet!

    10/26/2019 (Permalink)

As homeowners, you know how expensive and stressful it is to buy new appliances. It gets too expensive to a point where keeping your old washing machine can help you save money. However, that is not always the best way to go.

Yes, buying new appliances are very expensive, but this may be the best option. Holding on too your old appliance is nice, but the problems with it just might be twice the cost. Appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and even dish washers are a big reason for water damages.

The way these types of appliances cause water damages is from the back or inside the appliance itself. If a sensor or pipes starts to get rusty, not only can you see an overflow of suds, but even water everywhere in your house. If you want to keep your old appliance then go ahead, but make sure you keep an eye on it, or that new washing machine may cost 3 times more than you wanted.

Don't be a victim of a summer fire!

    6/8/2019 (Permalink)

Happy Summer! Its an amazing time of year. Summer barbecue, night bonfires, fireworks this sounds like a lot of fun! Now it can be a lot of fun, but can also be very dangerous. During the summer, most fires and deaths about 80 percent are during the summer because of these types of activities. Don't get me wrong these are amazing activities, but there is a way to stay safe.

Here are some tips that you can do to make sure you have a safe summer....

    • Always barbecue at least ten feet away from your home, and have a bucket of water with you. This will keep you from having that ash smell in your house.
    • Going camping or beach to have bonfire? Make sure you have a first aid kit, a form of communication, and a water bucket beside you at all times. If you are camping and telecommunication devices do not work, a flare will help you.
    • DO NOT SMOKE INSIDE YOUR HOME! This will not only get your house caught on fire, but you will have that nicotine odor that may last for weeks!
    • If you have plans to launch fireworks this 4th of July make sure you do it where there is no debris around, have adult supervision, and a bucket of water. Just a added plus make sure to check with the fire dept. to make sure it is safe.

Summer can be an amazing and not stressful time of the year to spend with family and friends. With a lot of activities, just make sure you are safe and don't become summers next victim! If you have any questions or need some work done call SERVPRO of North Sarasota at (941) 365-4614.

    Got Mold?

    6/6/2019 (Permalink)

Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors.

Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on.

Since mold requires water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings. Moisture problems can have many causes, including uncontrolled humidity. Some moisture problems in buildings have been linked to changes in building construction practices during the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Some of these changes have resulted in buildings that are tightly sealed, but may lack adequate ventilation, potentially leading to moisture buildup. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems may include:

    • Roof leaks
    • Landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under the building
    • Unvented combustion appliances
    • Delayed maintenance or insufficient maintenance are also associated with moisture problems in schools and large buildings

Moisture problems in portable classrooms and other temporary structures have frequently been associated with mold problems.

Remediators should avoid exposing themselves and others to mold-laden dusts as they conduct their cleanup activities. Caution should be used to prevent mold and mold spores from being dispersed throughout the air where they can be inhaled by building occupants.

Each scenario requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. When you discover mold, call us at 941-365-4614 and we will go through our standard mold remediation process:

    Hurricane Preparedness

    6/4/2019 (Permalink)

Summer is that time of year were the heat and humidity start to rise and become a really uncomfortable factor during our day to day activities. Unfortunately, they also create one of the worst natural disasters in the world. When there is water, heat and humidity there are hurricanes.

Hurricanes are never a pretty sight to see, and are very scary if your not prepared. Always have an emergency plan ready for before, during and after a hurricane. The only good thing about hurricanes is they can be predicted unlike earthquakes, you can always prepare for them. Here are some steps you can take to make sure you are safe during the three phases of a hurricane.

    Before:

    • Listen for any alarm, or alert from law enforcement. If they are asking you to evacuate then follow their orders.
    • Watch any weather broadcast to see the status of the storm.
    • Make sure you have food, water, and a source of power ready to go in a kit.
    • If you are planning to head out of state for safety make sure to leave early, and have a spare gas tank just in case.
    • Obtain an ERP from SERVPRO. This will come in handy after the storm.

    During:

    • If you are in the middle of a storm find shelter immediately. Do not remain outside.
    • If you were not able to evacuate, board up your windows to avoid any shattered glass.
    • Know that these storms will last a while. Try to locate your nearest law enforcement facility for help.

    After:

    • If you were asked to evacuate, do not return to your home unless told so by local law enforcement.
    • Be very cautious of were you step, and location. There will be a lot of debris, so you can still hurt yourself.
    • When you are allowed to go home check for any damages mainly check for water damages.
    • If you have any water damages take a look at that ERP. This will allow you to have SERVPRO Disaster Recovery team out there immediately to take care of any damages. Plus the ERP will help you organize who to call, so you can get back up an running in no time.

Hurricanes are never fun, and can become a very stressful situation. However, if you have a solid emergency plan and the right disaster team behind you everything will be okay. Most Common Water Damage

    5/24/2019 (Permalink)

The most common place for a water damage is in the bathroom, and why is that? In the bathroom people throw the most random things down the drain such toys, toilet paper, wipes etc. However, the shower is not the final destination of these items, it's the toilet.

When these items are flushed down into the toilet it can cause not just a back up to your septic tank but block pipes which can lead to water damage not just inside, but outside your home as well. This can cost a lot of money, and stress. Here are some ways to avoid these mishaps.....

    • Do not throw objects of any kind in the toilet. This will cause blockage.
    • Always check your toilet to make sure it is flushing properly, this will help avoid a flood in the bathroom.
    • Be sure to have your plumber check the toilet regularly to avoid any major damage.
    • Lastly, if you suspect a blockage do not fix it yourself. Let SERVPRO take care of it for  you, or a trained professional.

If you have a water damage in your home or business call here at SERVPRO of North Sarasota. Our guys are trained, and available 24 hours standing by, to make your water damage look "Like it never even happened."

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN A FLOOD THREATENS

    3/27/2019 (Permalink)

    Flooding

    Prepare NOW

    • Know types of flood risk in your area. Visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center for information.
    • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
    • If flash flooding is a risk in your location, then monitor potential signs, such as heavy rain.
    • Learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood response.
    • Gather supplies in case you have to leave immediately, or if services are cut off.

Smoking is a leading cause of home fire deaths.

    3/27/2019 (Permalink)

It is important for smokers to know the steps they can take to keep themselves and their families safe from fire. Put these fire safety messages into your own words when talking to people about smoking and fire safety on social media.

    • Smoke outside. Many things in your home can catch on fire if they touch something hot like a cigarette or ashes. It is always safer to smoke outside.
    • Put cigarettes out all the way. Do this every time. Don’t walk away from lit cigarettes and other smoking materials. Put water on the ashes and butts to make sure they are really out before you put them in the trash.
    • Be alert. Do not smoke after taking medicine that makes you tired. You may not be able to prevent or escape from a fire if you are sleepy or have taken medicine that makes you tired.
    • Never smoke around medical oxygen. Medical oxygen can explode if a flame or spark is near. Even if the oxygen is turned off, it can still catch on fire.
    • Never smoke in bed. Mattresses and bedding can catch on fire easily. Do not smoke in bed because you might fall asleep with a lit cigarette.
    • Put your cigarette out in an ashtray or bucket with sand. Use ashtrays with a wide base so they won’t tip over and start a fire.

    Kitchen Fires

    3/27/2019 (Permalink)

    Kitchen fires happen

Each year, from 2014 to 2016, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated average of 188,800 cooking fires in residential buildings.

    Clean Carpets

    3/27/2019 (Permalink)

    Clean Carpets

    Preventative Maintenance

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet. IICRC states that 79% of soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a key component to proper care and maintenance of carpet.

    Preventative maintenance actions include:

    Fire Is Fast

    3/19/2019 (Permalink)

Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States.

    Slow Cooker Safety Tips

    3/19/2019 (Permalink)

    crock pot fire

While cooking is the number one cause of U.S. home fires, let it be known that the chance of a slow cooker setting your house on fire is extremely slim. Most models don't run above 200-300 watts, making them a relatively low current, low heat appliance. According to the NFPA, there was an annual average of just 70 cooking fires involving slow cookers between 2011 and 2015, which resulted in two civilian injuries and no deaths.

Still, if you feel sudden apprehension at the idea, here are some slow cooker safety tips to follow:

Inspect the cord every time you use your slow cooker

Before you plug it in, take a minute to check both ends of the cord for any frayed or exposed wires. If you spot any, cut the cord and dispose of your appliance immediately — black tape is not a safe remedy.

Keep and store your slow cooker on a flat, stable surface

Make sure the exterior isn't close to any objects, especially flammable items like towels, curtains, or cooking oil. There shouldn't be anything underneath it and be sure it's nowhere near your sink or cooktop.

Unplug it when you're not cooking

Keep your slow cooker (and other countertop electric appliances) unplugged any time you aren't using it, and make sure the cord is wrapped neatly and not folded up in a way that will expose wires.

Maintain extreme caution when accepting hand-me-down appliances

Though slow cookers have been around for a long time, technology has improved a lot in recent years — older models don't offer modern safety features like auto shutoff. If you notice any off odors or see that the exterior of your slow cooker feels hotter than it should when in use, unplug it right away and toss it. If there's a chance your slow cooker has spent time in someone's garage, you should probably consider upgrading.

Be sure your smoke detector in your home is working

Check and change the batteries in your smoke detector at least once a year. This is a generally safety tip you should always follow, whether you're a slower cooker user or not!

We know how it was to deal with fire damage within a home and the time it will take to get this all squared away.

Home Fire Campaign Helps Save 464 Lives Since 2014

    9/5/2018 (Permalink)

The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign is now credited with helping save 464 lives since the effort began in October of 2014.

The Home Fire Campaign focuses on installing free smoke alarms in neighborhoods at high risk for fires and teaching people about fire safety. As of July 31, 2018, the effort has helped 464 lives, 161 of them children under age 18. Those affected report smoke alarms alerted them to evacuate their home or that they followed home fire escape plans they developed with the help of the Red Cross.

The Red Cross responds to as many as 64,000 disasters every year and most of these are home fires. Sadly, seven times a day someone in this country dies in a home fire, the most common disaster people face in this country. In a typical year, home fires kill more people in the United States than all other natural disasters combined.

To combat these statistics, the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014, focusing on installing free smoke alarms in neighborhoods at high risk for fires and teaching people about fire safety.

Since the program’s start, the Red Cross and its more than 4,530 partners have installed over 1.4 million smoke alarms in homes in more than 13,800 cities and towns across the country.

    In addition, the campaign has:

    • Reached more than 593,000 homes.
    • Served more than 1.5 million people living in the homes visited during the campaign.
    • Red Cross volunteers and partners have also replaced more than 66,800 smoke alarm batteries.
    • Helped more than 505,000 people develop home fire escape plans.
    • Reached more than 1.1 million children through preparedness programs.

    AVOIDING CONTRACTOR SCAMS

Every year, many homes and commercial buildings are damaged by severe storms. Property owners become the victims of unlicensed, uninsured, inexperienced contractors and outright scammers who come to prey on uninformed people.

Poor quality contractors and scammers can cause permanent damage, devalue your property, steal your money and put you at personal, legal and financial risk… not to mention all the headaches!

Many scams begin with a knock at your door, or an unsolicited call on the phone, claiming to be a contractor. Unfortunately, many scam companies imitate legitimate contractors, so protect yourself by checking your contractor out, before agreeing to an inspection.

Make sure any contractor you work with is properly licensed, insured, and provides 3 local references

    Mold Behind Wallpaper

    8/27/2018 (Permalink)

    Wallpaper and mold

Usually people who have mold behind wallpaper may not suspect that it is there. The most common place for mold to grow is behind the wallpaper that is in bathroom. As you can imagine, this is where there is a lot of moisture present from daily showering, etc. Therefore, it is a breeding ground for mold because the glue also attracts organic materials, such as dust, which is the favorite food combination for mold.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), inexperienced people who have attempted to remove mold from behind wallpaper usually exacerbate the problem by releasing a “massive” number of spores when the wallpaper is taken down. They also state that just by killing mold, and not getting rid of it, it can still cause serious health problems to some people. Therefore, when dealing with mold behind wallpaper, what you should know is that it is best to contact an expert mold remediation company, SERVPRO of North Sarasota. This will ensure that the problem will be effectively resolved and will provide a safe environment for you and your family.

Saving Floors From Water Damage And Mold

    Saving Wood Floors

Injectidry's High Pressure drying systems are specifically developed to target high risk areas of hidden moisture such as: walls and ceilings, even those coated with watertight finishes like PVA paint and vinyl wallpaper coverings, double-sheeted fire walls, party walls, sound barriers, insulation, walls behind cabinets and fixtures and floors. Active Hoseline allows the setup to be safer during the drying process. The blue tape you see on the walls is marking where the moisture levels were taken. The levels of moisture were documented during the drying procedure so the technicians know when the wet areas are dry. The system is set up to blow air through the small injectors into the wall cavities. Air scrubbers are used in the room to keep the air clean while drying.

    About Mold

    6/29/2018 (Permalink)

    Mold on Floor Board

Molds can gradually destroy the things they grow on.

You can prevent damage to your home and furnishings, save money, and avoid potential health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth.

Places that are often or always damp can be hard to maintain completely free of mold. If there’s some mold in the shower or elsewhere in the bathroom that seems to reappear, increasing the ventilation (running a fan or opening a window) and cleaning more frequently will usually prevent mold from recurring, or at least keep the mold to a minimum.

Absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. Mold can grow on or fill in the empty spaces and crevices of porous materials, so the mold may be difficult or impossible to remove completely.

When water leaks or spills occur indoors - ACT QUICKLY.

If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.

    Prevent Home Fires

    6/25/2018 (Permalink)

    http://www.SERVPROnorthsarasota.com/blog/fire-smoke-damage-restoration

Home fires are preventable! The following are simple steps that each of us can take to prevent a tragedy.

    Cooking

    • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
    • Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.
    • Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid-free zone" of 3 feet around the stove.
    • Position barbecue grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

    Smoking

    • Smoke outside and completely stub out butts in an ashtray or a can filled with sand.
    • Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can.
    • Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used, even if it is turned off. Oxygen can be explosive and makes fire burn hotter and faster.
    • Be alert - don’t smoke in bed! If you are sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy, put your cigarette out first.

    Electrical and Appliance Safety

    • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture.
    • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
    • Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker.

    Portable Space Heaters

    • Keep combustible objects at least three feet away from portable heating devices.
    • Buy only heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
    • Check to make the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism, and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.
    • Only use crystal clear K-1 kerosene in kerosene heaters. Never overfill it. Use the heater in a well-ventilated room.

    Fireplaces and Woodstoves

    • Inspect and clean woodstove pipes and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.
    • Use a fireplace screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of the fireplace to catch flying sparks.
    • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.

    Children

    • Take the mystery out of fire play by teaching children that fire is a tool, not a toy.
    • Store matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight, preferably in a locked cabinet.
    • Never leave children unattended near operating stoves or burning candles, even for a short time.

    More Prevention Tips

    • Never use stove range or oven to heat your home.
    • Keep combustible and flammable liquids away from heat sources.
    • Portable generators should NEVER be used indoors and should only be refueled outdoors or in well ventilated areas.

    6/1/2018 (Permalink)

    Be Prepared

A hurricane on the way can be frightening for everyone, especially children and teenagers. Going over your emergency plan now can help ease some of their fears, and give everyone the confidence that he/she will know what to do in the event of a storm.

    • Have a family meeting about the weather conditions. Explain why you’ll need to stay safe at home or evacuate as the storm nears.
    • Locate and agree on a safe room (or safe areas) in your home. Move pillows, flashlights, batteries, food and other hurricane supplies to that area.
    • Gather necessary medicines, glasses/contact lenses, a first aid kit, and items for children such as baby formula and diapers. Keep them handy.
    • Come up with an escape route from your house.
    • Decide on a rendezvous point where everyone can meet in case you’re separated during the storm.
    • Write out contact information for family members. Include work and school, meeting locations and emergency services.
    • Decide on a family contact who lives out of town or out of state, so all family members have a single point of contact in case of emergency. Make sure everyone knows this person and his/her phone number.
    • The Department’s Emergency Contact Information (ECI) program allows Floridians to securely register contact information online at https://services.flhsmv.gov/eci/ and in driver license offices. DHSMV Executive Director Terry Rhodes says the information can only be accessed by law enforcement in times of emergency. There is no fee to register.
    • Make sure a young child knows his/her name, address and home phone number.
    • Post emergency phone numbers near your phone and explain when and how to call 911.
    • Decide what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate. Make a plan for your pets - don’t leave them behind.
    • If there’s a chance you’ll evacuate, pack in advance, and allow children to pack one special item for comfort, such as a stuffed animal.

    What is mold?

    5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of North Sarasota at 941-365-4614

Molds are various types of fungi (singular = fungus) that grow in filaments and reproduce by forming spores that can travel through the air. The term mildew is sometimes used to refer to some kinds of mold, particularly mold in the home with a white or grayish color or mold growing in shower stalls and bathrooms. Mold may grow indoors or outdoors and thrives in damp, warm, and humid environments. Mold can be found in essentially any environment or season.

The most common types of household mold that are found indoors include Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus. Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra and sometimes referred to as "black mold") is a greenish-black mold that can also be found indoors, although it is less common than the other types of mold found in homes. Stachybotrys grows on household surfaces that have high cellulose content, such as wood, fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. There are types of mold that can grow on substances as different as foods and carpet.

Molds reproduce by forming tiny spores that are not visible to the naked eye. Mold spores are very hardy and can survive under conditions in which mold cannot grow, such as in dry and harsh environments. These spores travel through outdoor and indoor air. When the mold spores in the air land on a surface where moisture is present, mold can then start to grow.

Outdoors, molds play a role in the decomposition of organic material such as dead trees, compost, and leaves. They are most common in damp, dark areas or areas of decomposing plant life. Indoors, mold is often found in basements or shower stalls. Indoor mold in residential areas has the potential to cause health problems and can destroy surfaces and objects where it grows.

This year models are trending more for an El Nino to form.  This will limit the number of major storms due to the increased shear this phenomenon creates over the Atlantic basin.

    Home Fires

    4/10/2018 (Permalink)

    Florida Home on Fire

In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.

    Learn About Fires

    • Fire is FAST!
    • Fire is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a three-to-one ratio.

    Before a Fire

    Mold Is Everywhere

    4/10/2018 (Permalink)

    Mold in a building

Even the highest-quality items can show soiling over time. Protect your investment by calling SERVPRO of North Sarasota to clean and maintain your carpet and upholstery.

Today's carpet and upholstery materials vary dramatically. The SERVPRO System offers a number of cleaning options to match any type of upholstery or carpet.

Professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets.

    Smoking

    Smoking

    & Home Fire Safety

The place where we feel safest — at home — is where most smoking-materials

structure fires, deaths, and injuries occur. Smoking materials are the leading

cause of fire deaths. Smoking material fires are preventable.

    Smoking Safety

If you smoke, use only fire-safe cigarettes.

If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms and dens or in bedrooms.

Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high out of the reach of

    children, in a locked cabinet.

    Put It Out

Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn.

Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss,

dried grasses, leaves or other things that could ignite easily.

Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out, and dousing in water or sand is the best way to do that.

    Smoking and Medical Oxygen

Never smoke and never allow anyone to smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite more easily and make fires burn at a faster rate than normal. It can make an existing fire burn faster and hotter.

    Microwave Oven and Safety

    3/2/2018 (Permalink)

    Microwave Safety

    Microwave Oven

    and

    Safety

With busy lives, families rely on the microwave oven as a quick way to heat up a meal, warm up a drink or defrost dinner. While the convenience of the microwave oven is something we take for granted, safety should not be. By following a few simple safety tips you can prevent painful burns and possible fires.

    SAFETY TIPS

PURCHASE a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.

PLUG the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord.

MAKE sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users.

OPEN food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.

FOOD heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.

NEVER heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns. Warm a bottle in a bowl of warm — not hot or boiling — water, or by running it under the tap.

    MICROWAVE USE

Always supervise children when they are using a microwave oven.

Use only microwave-safe food containers or dishes. Never use aluminum foil or metal in a microwave oven.

If you have a fire in the microwave, leave the door closed, turn the oven off and unplug it from the wall. If the fire does not go out, get outside and call the fire department.

Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

    Common place to find mold

When water leaks or spills occur indoors - ACT QUICKLY.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it.

You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

    What to Do:

    What Not to Do:

    • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
    • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.

    Mold on Furniture

The Effects of what Mold can do to furniture.

When water leaks or spills occur indoor-Act Quickly. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases will help stop the growth of mold.

Consider these facts:

    • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
    • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
    • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
    • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
    • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
    • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

    Wood Floor Moldy

    10/27/2017 (Permalink)

    Moldy Floor

We wanted to bring up this mold story. SERVPRO of North Sarasota had a client that called us due to mold within their carpet. Once we started removing the carpet we noticed that what was harboring below the mold stained carpet... It was actually a nice wood floor underneath. The carpet and wood floor created such a living space for mold that it ended up rotting the wood floor. So much in fact the mold was almost eating away at the floor making it a very soft spot on the floor.

With the insurance claim, SERVPRO of North Sarasota had to remove the whole wood floor to remediate the mold that was growing so we could start taking action.  Because this was an insurance claim the client is now able to purchase new wood flooring that will be installed sometime this week.

What you can do until help arrives

Water Tips  |  Fire Tips   |  Biohazard Tips   |  Mold Tips

After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first:

    • Is it safe to stay in the house?
    • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
    • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
    • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

    What To Do After Flooding

    • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
    • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
    • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
    • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
    • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
    • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
    • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
    • Gather loose items from floors.
    • What NOT To Do After Flooding
    • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
    • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
    • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
    • Don't use television or other household appliances.
    • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Hurricane Harvey near peak intensity prior to landfall in southern Texas on August 25

Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year period with no hurricanes of Category 3 intensity or higher making landfall in the United States. SERVPRO of North Sarasota received an early morning call from homeowners letting us know about a fire that was engulfing their home.  The fire ignighted from one of their collectible corvettes parked in their garage and the fire then spread to the insided of their home.

When we arrived on the scene, firefighters were just cleaning up from the smoke damaged home.  The soot carried throughout the whole 2,500 sqft home and destroyed many belongings and even left no trace of two vehicles on the garage except for the body frame. We were able to assess the area and let the homeowner know that we will do our best to clean up the damaged areas to where it will feel like home again.

We know how it was to deal with fire damage within a home and the time it will take to get this all squared away.

    What's In Your Walls

    8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Mold found within the wall joints, behind the wall paper that the condo unit has had on the wall for years.

SERVPRO of North Sarasota was conducting a mold inspection and found out that many of the mold issues were coming from within the walls of this condo unit. There had been a past water issue with a cracked pipe and the water was never taken care of properly which resulted in mold growth. The condo unit had years worth of wall paper which resulted in a double layer of protection to make it easier for the mold to grow.

Now, with SERVPRO of North Sarasota conducting the work. We found the issue and were able to remove the drywall and attack the mold right where it was growing.  The customer could not believe her eyes when we showed her just how bad mold can get.

The unit owner was surprised, but happy that we were able to take care of this before it got any worse.

    Be Informed

    7/24/2017 (Permalink)

    Mold in your home

Molds are found in every environment,

and mold spores reproduce rapidly when

moisture is present. An Institute of

    Medicine study found excessive dampness

indoors encourages the growth of molds

and other organisms, causing a public

health problem. The EPA advised that the

potential health concerns from molds are

an important reason to prevent moisture

problems leading to mold growth. It is

especially important to clean up existing

indoor mold growth to increase property

appeal and retain its value. If a property

    has experienced a water intrusion,

    SERVPRO of North Sarasota can

inspect the damage to see whether

moisture has penetrated materials or is

    allowing mold growth.

    Bracing For A Hurricane

    6/26/2017 (Permalink)

You will get some warning with a tropical storm or hurricane.

    As the Storm Approaches

Listen for weather updates on local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio.

This clogs up the stormwater pipes and prevents water from draining.

If you own a business, follow your Business Continuity Plan. For more information on how to create a Business Continuity Plan, go online to www.ready. gov

    Sarasota Smoke and Soot Cleanup

    3/17/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Sarasota Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.

Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

    Smoke and soot facts:

    • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
    • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
    • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

    Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Sarasota will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

    • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

    • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

    • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

    Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
