Condo Living: Pros and Cons
SERVPRO always needed in older condominiums
SERVPRO always and will always have calls out to condominiums. In Florida, vacation and retirees prefer condos for obvious reasons. Less hassle of maintenance, no landscaping responsibility, and a community feel are important to snow birds and people here on pleasure.
One of the biggest problems with condominiums though is that if one unit has a problem, more than likely several units do. Condominiums even at the most expensive ends still may be older. As with this building, the property manager even says, "You live in a condo, you're eventually going to have water problems." His particular building was built in the 1970's when they still used cask iron plumbing. It is just a part of regular maintenance for him now to clean and patch up what he can, because a full plumbing replacement is not possible and not cost effective.
From one floor to the next underneath it, in the walls and in the carpet, water will always find a way!
SERVPRO to Save the Day!
Don't let flooding from rain compromise your building or products!
What do you get when you add poorly sealed windows, no gutters, a cracked wall, and not being able to check on your property? The perfect recipe for disaster in your business. This picture shows what can happen when you're away from your office building during storm season. This company had major flooding in their storage space and was not discovered until after the weekend. The water had not moved much and there was loss of some products but mostly a huge headache for the owners!
SERVPRO of North Sarasota was there to remove the water, fan with our air movers, and dehumidify the air. We also removed all the damaged goods and set aside for the owners to go through while monitoring temperature and humidity levels. Luckily SERVPRO got there quick when the problem was discovered or their building could have been compromised more by standing water. We won't always have perfect buildings because of time and shifting environments, but that's when you know you can count on SERVPRO!

Sprinkler Disaster Diverted!
SERVPRO here to save the day!
SERVPRO was in St. Pete this last week due to a moving company accidentally hitting a sprinkler head on the 9th floor. The water reached several floors below flowing into several apartments which can lead to extensive damaged. SERVPRO was contacted and the team started mitigating the problem immediately. Flooding can lead to other problems such as mold which can further require extensive repair and/or replacement. Water damage has to be controlled and dealt with as soon as possible. Don’t let a small mistake cost your business big! Our specialized equipment and diligent technicians got these several floors back to the revenue stream for The Wayland. Mistakes can and will happen and the faster the clean up the better. "Like it never even happened."
Commercial Buildings and Mold
Don't let mold take over your whole building! Get control ASAP
SRQ SUMMER IS IN FULL BLAST! Old buildings, open windows, or just forgetting to check the humidity level can all factor into mold creeping in!
This Sarasota business discovered extensive microbial growth in their building, thanks to a water leak that went undetected for months. Believe it or not, mold problems like this can be mitigated with the right expertise and equipment. SERVPRO of North Sarasota has trained technicians that were able to test and remove the mold growth, and then restore the space to preloss conditions. The business was very grateful that we could recover their building and protect them from any potential health effects.

Grease fires can be avoided but can also get uncontrollable.
US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 172,900 home structure fires per year started by cooking activities in 2014-2018.
Cooking was, by far, the leading cause of all residential building fires and injuries.
Confined fires, generally smaller fires, accounted for 91 percent of residential building cooking fires.
In 83 percent of nonconfined cooking fires in residential buildings, the fires were limited to the object or room of fire origin.
The leading specific factor contributing to ignition in nonconfined cooking fires in residential buildings was unattended equipment (40 percent).
Smoke alarms and automatic extinguishing systems (AESs), 67 and 8 percent respectively, were present in nonconfined cooking fires in occupied residential buildings.
Home fires are preventable! The following are simple steps that each of us can take to prevent a tragedy.
- Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.
- Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid-free zone" of 3 feet around the stove.
- Position barbecue grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Reached more than 1.1 million children through preparedness programs.

As the Storm Approaches
Listen for weather updates on local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio. Stay tuned to the latest information.
REMEMBER: Hurricanes can be unpredictable. There is always potential error in the forecast track from the National Hurricane Center. Don’t focus on the exact forecasted track, listen to local officials. (For more information go to www.noaa.gov or www.weather.gov, click on Tampa Bay area.)
Check your Disaster Supplies. Get any needed items.
Clean and fill bathtubs and sinks before a storm so you’ll have extra clean water.
Turn refrigerator and freezer dials to the coldest settings and avoid opening the doors to help keep perishable food in case of a power outage.
Refill prescriptions. Maintain at least a two-week supply of medication during hurricane season.
Clear your yard of lawn furniture, potted plants, bicycles, trash cans and other potential airborne missiles. Leave the swimming pool filled and super-chlorinated. Cover the filtration system.
Protect your windows and glass doors with plywood or storm shutters. Brace double entry and garage doors at the top and bottom.
If there is a chance flooding could threaten your home, move important items such as electronics, antiques and furniture off the floor.
Fill your car’s gas tank and check oil, water and tires. Gas pumps won’t operate without electricity.
Secure your boat early. Drawbridges will be closed to boat traffic after an evacuation order is issued.
Get cash. Banks and ATMs won’t work without electricity and few stores will be able to accept credit cards or personal checks.
Never sweep or blow yard leaves, pine needles, grass clippings or soil into the street or storm water system. This clogs up the stormwater pipes and prevents water from draining.
